Among the different actions promoted, we are bringing back the #BermeoTunaPintxoTour, a route through hospitality venues where you can taste the best pintxos made from tuna or albacore. Each bar will offer its own unique pintxo, completing the route's selection across the 15 bars that make up the Pintxo Tour. The raw material used to make these pintxos, in addition to guaranteeing that it comes from local companies, ensures the product's sustainability—a defining characteristic of the tuna/albacore, both canned and fresh or frozen, offered by Bermeo's companies. But this year there's even more: we have a pintxo competition! From July 17 to 26, people can vote for the best tuna pintxo using a brochure with a map and voting sheet, which participants can pick up either at the tourist office or at the bars along the route.
The visits to the canning factories activity has been canceled this year for logical safety reasons, avoiding any risk to both visitors and factory workers. However, with the goal of maintaining a tourist activity that highlights both the local canning industry and the high quality of its products, we are launching a new initiative: Bermeo Tuna Tasting. This gastronomic activity will take place on Wednesdays in July and August at 11:00 AM at the Fisherman's Museum (Museo del Pescador) in Bermeo. It is an activity that begins with a brief visit to the Fisherman's Museum, where Bermeo's tradition and connection to tuna fishing are explained. This is followed by a screening of the Bermeo Tuna World Capital video, which highlights the local fishing and canning industry, the fleet's good practices, the expertise of the seafaring people, and the high quality of the products.
Next, the workshop begins with the creation of 3 pintxos by chef Martín Lucas, who is highly renowned in the area. These are pintxos made from different types of tuna/albacore using canned products from factories belonging to BTWC. After an explanation of their preparation and the characteristics of the ingredients used, the pintxos are tasted alongside a glass of Txakoli wine. The activity lasts one hour and costs €10, and prior reservation is required at turismourdaibai.com or at the Bermeo Tourist Office.
The tourist offering is completed with the continuation of the visits to the San Pedro guild in Bermeo, where the neskatilas (women working in traditional port-support roles) lead a guided tour through the fishermen's guild, concluding the visit with a tasting of canned products from Bermeo. During this visit, the neskatilas themselves explain first-hand their own work as well as the labor of the inshore fishing boats in the port. Additionally, a video is shown visualizing the fish unloading process and the work of the neskatilas and net weavers (rederas).
