Bermeo Tuna participated in various events at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, where it presented a real-world example of the implementation of SDG 14 with global impact: it participated in an official session and organized two side events.

What is it?

Together with UN Etxea and Local 2030, Bermeo Tuna was selected to organise a new side event within the framework of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York, where progress towards SDG 14: Life below water was discussed.

This meeting highlighted Bermeo Tuna’s experience as an exemplary case of localising the SDGs, particularly SDG 14, and its contribution to the economically, socially and environmentally sustainable development of the regions in which it operates. During the event, the International Declaration for Tuna Sustainability, promoted by Bermeo Tuna, was also presented. This initiative seeks to align public and private sector stakeholders around common principles of sustainability, equity and shared responsibility.

Objectives

To highlight progress in sustainability within the Basque Country’s tuna value chain within the framework of SDG 14 (Life below water).
To present the experience of Bermeo Tuna World Capital as an example of localising the SDGs with a global impact.
To promote the International Declaration on Tuna Sustainability.
To strengthen collaboration between UN Etxea and Bermeo Tuna to internationalise Basque best practices.
To promote models of a sustainable blue economy, multi-level governance and the responsible use of marine resources.
