Arrain Azoka 2019

Arrain Azoka

An annual event in Bermeo where the fishing and canning industries showcase their products, flavours and maritime culture, with tastings and activities for all ages. Bermeo Tuna takes part with culinary offerings designed to introduce visitors to tuna in various forms and to learn about its value and sustainability.

#Bermeotunacontraelcáncer charity campaign

Bermeo Tuna World Capital (BTWC), with the help of the Bermeoko Arrain Azoka Association, has launched a charity campaign to highlight the benefits of eating tuna in cancer prevention. Anyone wishing to participate simply needs to take a photo of themselves eating tuna and post it on social media (Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter) with the hashtag #Bermeotunaminbiziarenaurka or #Bermeotunacontraelcáncer.

Objectives

  • To highlight the value of seafood and the work of the fishing and canning sectors.
  • To offer a gastronomic and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
  • To raise awareness of tuna (bluefin and albacore) in a practical and enjoyable way.
  • To strengthen the connection between the product, local culture and good practices regarding sustainability.

#Bermeotunacontraelcáncer.

CAMPAIGN
  • For each photo uploaded to social media, BTWC will donate one euro to the Spanish Association Against Cancer (Asociación contra el Cáncer). This money will be used to fund the research carried out by the CIC bioGUNE-Ciberehd center in Bizkaia, which analyzes the benefits of tuna consumption in preventing liver cancer.
WHEN IS IT?
  • The solidarity campaign #Bermeotunaminbiziarenaurka #Bermeotunacontraelcancer begins on May 9 and will run until May 20. Therefore, this initiative—whose core pillars are tuna, research, and solidarity—will play a special role in Bermeo's Arrain Azoka (Fish Fair) on May 17, 18, and 19. The Association Against Cancer and the CIC bioGUNE center will have a stand at the fairgrounds to raise awareness about their work and offer details on this research project.
WHERE IS IT?
  • Additionally, for entertainment purposes across various settings of the Fish Fair—such as the solidarity area at the old fishermen's guild and the pintxo tasting area—attendees will find fun photocalls to take pictures of themselves eating tuna and upload them to social media.
What does it consist of?
  • This campaign was presented in Bermeo with the presence of the president of BTWC, Bittor Oroz; the mayor of Bermeo and president of Arrain Azoka Elkartea, Idurre Bideguren; Gabriel María Otalora, manager of the Association Against Cancer of Bizkaia; Malu Martínez Chantar, Director of the Liver Disease Laboratory at CIC bioGUNE; Teresa Cardoso Delgado, Senior Liver Disease Researcher at CIC bioGUNE; and Iker Oyenarte, Liver Disease Researcher at CIC bioGUNE.

  • This project, which will be developed in the laboratory of Dr. María Luz Martínez Chantar at the CIC bioGUNE-Ciberehd research center in Bizkaia, aims to evaluate the beneficial effects of Omega-3 fatty acids in preclinical models of liver cancer. Tuna offers numerous health benefits: since it is rich in Omega-3, it acts as a powerful antioxidant, improves memory, and supports eye health. Furthermore, it helps maintain a healthy lifestyle by regulating overweight and obesity, and reduces the likelihood of suffering cardiovascular accidents.

  • Likewise, according to the researchers, eating tuna reduces the risk of developing liver cancer. Hence, the importance of the solidarity campaign #Bermeotunaminbiziarenaurka #Bermeotunacontraelcancer, especially considering that liver cancer is the sixth most common cancer worldwide, with 3,000 cases detected annually in Spain. It is the second leading cause of cancer death globally.
