Bermeo Tuna Forum: sustainability and global partnerships for the future of tuna

The first international Forum organised by Bermeo Tuna World Capital, bringing together institutions, scientists, companies and international organisations in Bilbao and Bermeo to promote sustainable and comprehensive management of the tuna sector.

Introduction

The Bermeo Tuna Forum, organised by Bermeo Tuna World Capital, has been established as an international space for debate, reflection and cooperation on the sustainability of tuna and its entire value chain, integrating environmental, social and economic perspectives. A forum bringing together international institutions, United Nations agencies, tuna companies, scientific organisations and representatives of the fishing sector in Bilbao and Bermeo. 

Objectives

  • To promote the sustainable management of tuna on a global scale.
  • To create international alliances between institutions, companies, scientists and organisations linked to the fishing secto
  • To promote an International Declaration on Tuna Sustainability aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
  • To promote traceability, the fight against illegal fishing and respect for human rights throughout the tuna supply chain.
  • To position Bermeo as an international benchmark for the blue economy and sustainable fishing.
The Bermeo Tuna Forum 2023 brought together around 300 attendees from international institutions, United Nations agencies, tuna companies, scientific organisations and representatives of the fishing sector at the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao and subsequently in Bermeo. During the forum, the main challenges facing the comprehensive sustainability of tuna were discussed, addressing issues such as international governance, responsible fishing, traceability, technological innovation and labour rights in the sector. One of the key highlights was the presentation of the proposed International Declaration on Tuna Sustainability, as well as the signing of the Alliance of Tuna Cities between municipalities from different continents committed to marine sustainability. The event consolidated Bermeo’s position as an international leader in promoting the blue economy and global cooperation on tuna.
